Don’t Write Too Much

There’s a major danger that can come with trying to make money online. One that people don’t foresee. A lot of bloggers write far too much content. They create content that isn’t read, all to no avail. When the don’t get any traction, they despair. A lot of this can be avoided simply by not writing too much. I know it’s weird and counterintuitive, but writing less, rather than more, is often the way to go when it comes to making money online. Here’s why.

Failure is normal

Some websites are going to do well, others aren’t. Even having the experience of having created a blog or a website to completion is infinitely valuable. If you can truly lock in and get it done, you’re going to find yourself outperforming everyone in the space of a few years. But some blogs do fail, even if you do everything right. If you spend 10 years working on just one blog, you might find yourself at risk of running into income problems later on. The internet is unreliable, and failiures are normal and frequent. This means that in today’s era diversification is what matters most. If you don’t diversify, you’re losing.

You don’t want to risk too much

If you risk too much and you fail, your life could be ruined. You don’t want to fail. Do the necessary work, but don’t give yourself too much room to fail. Be realistic about what you can achieve. Remember, $1,100/month puts you in the top 20% of earners globally. If you’re earning this much money, you can live a nice upper middle-class life in a lot of the world. So, once you have 200–400 articles, you should be thinking about your next project, unless you have a high risk tolerance. If you have a high risk tolerance, you can do whatever you want. But the average person would benefit from diversification after a certain number of blog posts. There’s an opportunity cost to writing articles.

A regular job + your marketing skills should get you ahead

If your business is going to be 50% or more of your wealth, then it’s going to take a ton of work and sacrifice, especially in the early years. But when you get your first site done, you’re going to feel amazing. You’ll likely know what you’re doing. Now you can advise other people, start a second website, and do much more. So don’t spend too much time on one site. We live in a world in which life can be great with three sources of location independent income and some investments. You want to get those three sources of income up and running as fast as possible. If you have 1 + a job, you’re better off than if you have 2 failed ones that were attempted one after the other. Your job might suck, but it’s useful in order for you to get some savings under you. Get a job once you’re decent at writing.

Focus on raising the value of your content

If you can figure out how to target stuff that matters with your writing, that’s when you win. Everyone who reads, reads with intent. Try to figure out how to raise the value of your content, and then that’s when you can win. Raising the value of your content happens in one three ways. The first is through search engine optimization. The more targeted your content is, the more money you make. The second way you can raise the value of the content is by raising the quality of your writing. The more engaging you are to read, the better your articles will convert. For some reason it took me a long time to truly understand this.

If you know how to write, you can make money. It’s just about applying it properly and understanding that we live in a world in which making money online can be quite tricky. Pick an industry that’s a real industry. Start a business that’s a real business. Don’t just follow trends. That’s how you end up becoming an NPC influencer. Analyze every potential online job carefully. Create some long-lasting content and leave it up there. Get yourself a piece of the internet. Just break each of those pieces into bite sized chunks so that you can enjoy your life without sweating and taking on risk.
