Why Do People Smoke Weed?

Weed is a drug that’s taken over recently. It was always semi-legal in Holland. People would smoke at coffee shops (where it was also sold), even though the country didn’t have a legal framework regulating the sale of the drug. It was illegal pretty much everywhere else.

Things ironically began to change in the United States. Weed was first legalized for medicinal purposes, beginning on the west coast decades ago.

So why do people smoke weed?
Most people only smoke weed socially. In most countries, less than 25% of the population will have used Cannabis in the past year. About 10% of those users are addicted. People who are addicted to weed fall into four categories in my book.

  • Those Who Have Been Traumatized
  • Those Who Are Bored
  • Those Who Are Angry
  • People in Physical Pain

Those who are physically ailing can be excused, but it’s never good to self-medicate. Take it from me, I’ve been through the process. You think you’re doing things right, but you’re just not. There’s no substitute for medical experience. If you don’t trust western medicine, it’s better to use an alternative healer rather than wing it on your own. None of this is medical advice.

Angry stoners are less obvious to many, but if you’ve ever gotten close to a lot of habitual smokers, you know they’re real. Angry stoners are always a bit irritated, even when they’re high. You really notice their bad attitudes when they sober up. Dealing with angry stoners can be a drag. They never seem like they’re having fun and can make you feel very insecure about yourself. It’s important to realize that most angry stoners are just mad about the way someone else treated them or are holding on to some past trauma. Don’t take them personally.

People who are bored are the most confusing types of stoners, because they appear to be wasting their potential. These people are often intelligent, and even more frequently come from wealthy families. People who are bored in life are dangerous. They mean well, but their idleness can lead you to places you may not want to go.

Those who have been traumatized are the most common and most incorrigible addicts. It’s unfortunate, but trauma is disastrous for human health. It makes people smoke more, drink more, and develop all sorts of awful health problems that are associated with premature mortality. People who are traumatized might be dealing with a betrayal, an accident, the death of a loved one, or a sexual assault. Whatever calamity they dealt with traps them in a cycle of despair. In order for them to get clean they need to heal from the trauma, but in order to heal from the trauma they need to get clean (according to psychologists). I’m not a doctor, but I found it easiest to heal from the trauma before quitting weed.

Should I Stop Smoking Weed?
That depends on how you’re feeling. Is weed making you feel alive and energized? Are you smoking it with your friends, celebrating your wins in life, and doing it just to have fun? Or are you using it as a crutch to numb that ever-present feeling of boredom? If it’s the latter, you need to stop smoking if you want to maximize your quality of life. I know it sounds harsh but I’m speaking from experience. I was forced to come to this realization through economics: I could no longer afford to smoke anything. You should stop smoking weed if you’re experiencing any of the following due to your smoking:

  • Health Problems
  • Financial Issues
  • Legal Troubles

Outside of that, if you find that weed is causing you to avoid your relationships and hobbies you should definitely quit. You only have one life to live. It’s not worth wasting it on smoking and bullshit. Make friends, cultivate good relationships, and be happy. You’ll feel better about yourself in the long run, and you’ll have fewer regrets on your deathbed. If you doubt what I’m telling you in this article, go spend some time with an alcoholic or drug addict in their late 40s or early 50s. The realizations that come with one’s impending mortality can be quite intense. I certainly don’t envy those who I’ve seen in such a predicament. Meeting them is what motivated me to get sober from hard drugs and alcohol.

How Do I Stop Smoking Weed?
Letting go of the devil’s lettuce isn’t so easy. If you’re reading this article, it’s likely you or the person you’re trying to help is completely addicted and has formed a habit. This means the urge to smoke weed is entrenched, and smoking occurs almost subconsciously. It’s going to take discipline and a conscious effort to stop it entirely, but it definitely is possible. I was able to, and it was like turning the brightness up in my life. You can find my article on quitting weed here.

Quitting weed is a decision that can only pay off, unless it’s medically prescribed. You’ll save money, be more productive, and feel happier. There also won’t be that nagging feeling of guilt in the back of your mind. I highly suggest you do it.

Thanks for paying attention.
