A few years ago, I decided to strike out on my own and take a trip to Latin America. I thought it would be fun, a good time that I could use to “learn Spanish by immersion”. Boy did I fall on my face. I had a good trip, and I met a lot of people, but it turns out learning a new language from scratch is pretty dang hard. People who say they learn by immersion are usually understating how much work they put in. But how are we supposed to go about exploring new cultures? We don’t want to be the rude foreigners, but it feels so hard to learn on our own.
Well, here’s a new AI in town, and I think it’s about to change the world. Character AI is a free online AI chatbot- one that allows its users to make modifications to it. When you create a paid account and train Character AI, you can create characters that act just the way you want them to.
Somebody on character went above and beyond with Character AI’s interface and built a language learning AI named. This AI is trained to help you learn languages. It has a pretty broad range. It even knows some Vietnamese.
This is next level, especially for poor people from poor countries. For the first time in history, people can learn a language on their own, and practice speaking without help. This will save them hundreds if not thousands in tutoring fees and school supplies.
To supplement AI, you can do some training. The best way to get training is not through immersion. I tried and failed at this in Spanish, as stated earlier in the article. Instead, you should use a linguist, or a lesson plan created by one. Linguists study how languages work. They know the best ways to learn new ones.
Enter Plimseur, a set of language learning courses that will allow you to make great strides in the language of your choosing. If you practice those daily, you’ll be able to speak at a mediocre level before traveling to your next country. A mediocre level might seem bad, but it will make a big difference if it’s your first time touching down in a new country.
If you practice with both Character AI and Plimseur, you’ll have a rough idea of what’s going on when listening to a lot of conversations in your language of interest. When you travel, you may not understand as much as the locals, but you’ll have a rough idea of what’s going on. I suggest you take advantage of these modern tools, as they weren’t available even a few years ago.
Overall, the process of learning a new language will be daunting and challenging, but it will be worthwhile in the long run. Once you’ve mastered your language, you’ll be able to interact with a whole new set of people. That’s like another world opening up for you. New conversations, new perspectives, and new experiences. It’s like everything else I talk about on this blog. Just keep your head down and it’ll happen for you.
