This blog post is likely to be pretty short. That’s because I’ll be explaining a very simple concept. You can call me a hypocrite, but I’m not. Not really. That’s because I’m still going to do my best to make my post as long as possible. Even if I don’t have a lot to say, I’m going to make the text of this article as long as possible, without annoying the reader (hopefully). As a blogger, you should do this too, as it can make a massive difference in the success of your writing.
How long are most blog posts?
It was found that the average blog post that was found on the first page of Google was about 1,400 words. This is a decent amount of writing. Almost 6 pages, if you’re to print it in a reasonably large font. If you’re going to be writing 1,400 words consistently, you need to have a rough idea of what you’re trying to say, and you need to produce content consistently. It isn’t easy. Skilled writers are able to write 500 words per day. That’s two posts per week. Seasoned pros generally produce 4,000 words daily. That’s less than 3 posts per day. A blog post isn’t super long, but it isn’t a small undertaking either. A standard newspaper article is only about 300-500 words (rounding up). To craft even a short blog post takes a decent bit of effort, meaning that even average bloggers aren’t slackers.
How long is the average blog post?
My average blog post is about 700 words. I know I’m unlikely to rank at the very top of Google with 700 words, but my blog posts do get search traffic. With a bit more elbow grease, I’ll have myself a budding website at this rate. I recently migrated to WordPress, but my back-catalog of articles is quite immense. I’m likely to diversify into making YouTube videos soon. Two sources of income are better than one.
The average writer in this survey is only putting out a little over 1,100 words. This means that most writers could stand to make their blog posts a decent bit longer. A 400-word difference is a decrease of more than 20%. That’s a big difference. Odds are you should be writing more. Longer articles and more posts.
Why should you make your blog posts longer?
To inform and entertain. If you’re helping people solve problems, you’re going to want to create enough content to fully answer their questions. If you’re keeping people entertained, you want to be as engaging as possible. Making your blog posts longer is the best way to do that. Another reason to make your blog posts long is so that you’re able to create a good professional portfolio, even if the specific blog project you’re working on isn’t or money. Having long posts that rank well will help you a lot in this department.
Having long blog posts also means that they have more content. Blog posts with lots of content are indexed by Google, and you can easily find yourself ranking for search terms outside of the title. This is especially true if you’re discussing public figures or current events. Google is very smart. If your article is relevant, you can get pretty far just filling it with informative content. You will rank for a variety of terms.
How can you make your posts longer?
The first thing you can do is try to make your posts expand on simple ideas. Start the article with a concept, and work from there. You want to flesh out a structured topic. You don’t want to write a bunch of nonsense that people don’t read. The second thing you want to do to make your posts longer is break them into separate paragraphs. Blogs which are broken into separate paragraphs give you the opportunity to explain things. You can fill your posts with good content within your subparagraphs. The third and final thing you can do to make your essay longer is to tell stories and give examples. Readers love stories, especially ones that are true. This is why authors like Malcolm Gladwell became so popular in the 2010s. They described interesting aspects of life without getting too far into the weeds. Even if you’re writing non-fiction, entertaining your readers is a great strategy.
Write lots of posts and write as much as possible. I repeat it over and over on this blog, and that’s because most bloggers aren’t creating enough content. They have half-baked websites and wonder why they don’t succeed. You can’t expect to win with only 100 blog posts. That’s two posts per week. How are you spending the rest of your days? To win big at blogging, you have to produce content consistently for a long time. If you can reach a certain inflection point, you should have enough content to live on. This can be a fairly high threshold. 800 blog posts returning you $2,000 per month for 3 years? Well, that’s about $90 per blog post. You can make big money blogging even if you aren’t that good at it. It just takes time and persistence. Writing long posts will make your effort and hard work more worthwhile. This post wasn’t that long. It probably won’t even end up being 1,000 words. But I pushed myself, and I was able to write more than the 700 words I mentioned earlier. As a result, this post will likely be more successful than most of my others. That’s what matters in the world of blogging.
Thanks for paying attention.
