Where Will Blogging Be Five Years from Now?

Blogging is one of those fields of making money online that everyone seems to have forgotten about. And yet, it’s one of the internet’s biggest money makers. Lots of people are making money hand over fist blogging. It’s doable if you do the work, and most people don’t want to do the work. But today, I wanted to talk about the future of blogging, specifically what the blogging landscape in 2030 should look like if my notions about the future are correct. Here are my predictions for the world of blogging and internet marketing in 2030.

More people online

This is obvious. More and more people in Africa and Asia are getting access to technology. You would be surprised by how many people aren’t online. But more people will join.

Fewer smart people online

This is because the bulk of new users will be those living in poor countries and using cellphones. They’ll be online, and they’ll be doing stuff. But it won’t be stuff that’s very complex. In order to find complexity, you’ll have to niche down and/or go to select spaces.

Those online won’t be able to afford premium games

This means that you’re going to have a lot of competition across free traffic sources. I expect a lot of people will spend a lot of time playing free games on their phone and hanging out on social media. There probably won’t be a lot of long form content. This will be both an advantage and disadvantage. Less competition but less potential for mainstream success.

Blogging will get harder, not easier to market

There will be a lot of difficulties when it comes to getting a new blog started. People won’t be reading much. People from poor countries will be competing with you. AI will eventually take away the edge given by being able to write properly.

Blogging will get easier to do

AI is good for that. It will make it so that blogging gets very, very easy on the content production front. As a matter of fact, I would question whether becoming a fashion blogger is worthwhile. Someone can just make those posts with AI. Even a site like Medium can’t defend against someone using AI bots to write about basic stuff. The barrier for entry will raise, but also lower. There will also likely be new blogging and microblogging platforms. Social media and blogging will become synonymous as competion increases.

Consolidation

Right now, all the little guys are getting screwed over in some way, shape, or form. You have to be pretty big and pretty nimble to be totally unaffected by these current economic times. Things are going to keep getting harder. More and more people are going to get desperate and try to create content online, in countries that are both rich and poor.

AI will continue to take over the info space

There’s so much informational content out there. Why repeat it? AI will prevent us from being redundant. A lot of fat will be trimmed, when it comes to the American population of writers.

Less actual competition

Fewer people will be trying to blog, as so many of them will get crushed by the next five years. Traffic will rise but so will supply. The supply of people blogging will outweigh the traffic rise until about 2029 or 2030. That’s when the resurgence will take place.

There will still be a market

What I said was basically all doom and gloom, but I honestly didn’t mean it that way. Blogging will still generate revenue, just less revenue per article. And that number will keep trending downward relative to the cost of living until 2031. This is why it’s best to go all in. The small but reliable returns will mean that nobody will really be competing with you. A little extra work will put you in a league of your own.

Blogging will have a resurgence in the 2030s

It’s really about who can afford an education, who can afford a PC, and who has the time to sit and read. People were poorer in many ways during the 2000s, but they had access to a lot of stuff at the median because the middle class was stronger. As global GDP expands, more and more people will be able to afford nice things such as laptops and TVs. I think that’s when we see more people take up reading for leisure, and when blogging comes back at full strength. Things will also get a lot easier in the English-speaking world. People won’t be trying to write in our language, as there will be enough money to be made in their countries.

Why blog?

If you are living in a poor country, blogging might be one of your best hopes for making some extra money and improving your financial situation. It’s a skill that with mastery, can position you to win at the highest level in the next 10 years. Just endure 5 years of pain and enjoy yourself as the next flood of digital natives comes online.

Writing online is going through a tough period right now, but it’ll always be one of the best ways to make money. It’s just that in our current state, we have a lot of people online who produce content but don’t buy stuff. This is ideal, but means that the internet is an area of guaranteed growth. It’ll get easier and easier to make money online over time. This means blogging is the future, even though we’re going through a rough adjustment period.

Thanks for paying attention.
